Impact

Academic Achievement: • Educational technology research: Conducted a systematic analysis of language learning challenges and effective EdTech methodologies • Gamification design: Applied proven game mechanics and motivation principles to the educational context • Cultural sensitivity: Designed for diverse international student backgrounds and varying English proficiency levels Design Innovation: • Music-based learning: Integrated music as an engaging medium for accent exposure, vocabulary, and cultural learning • Social learning: Combined individual progress with community features addressing isolation while supporting language practice • Adaptive difficulty: Designed personalised learning paths matching student proficiency and goals Learning Foundation: • Experience-centred design: Prioritised authentic international student needs over traditional educational efficiency metrics • Systematic methodology: Demonstrated complete UX research and design process from problem definition through prototyping • EdTech principles: Applied educational psychology and technology research to platform architecture

Context

Campus Music represented academic exploration of educational technology design addressing international students' dual challenges of English language barriers and COVID-19 social isolation. The project investigated how a music-based gamified platform could make language learning engaging while facilitating social connections and cultural understanding. The challenge was applying UX design and gamification principles to an educational context while serving diverse student backgrounds and proficiency levels.

The challenge

The academic challenge was designing an engaging language learning platform that also addressed international students isolation and cultural adaptation needs. Key challenges: Language learning barriers: Traditional methods are ineffective and demotivating for many international students requiring contextualised, engaging approach Social isolation crisis: COVID-19 remote learning is eliminating crucial peer interaction and cultural exchange for international students Cultural adaptation: Students needed exposure to diverse English accents and Australian cultural expressions for successful integration Motivation sustainability: Language apps are typically abandoned quickly; the design needed to ensure long-term engagement and consistent practice

My approach

Our UTS team applied educational technology research methodology combining gamification principles with social learning theory and cultural design thinking.

Research approach: Literature foundation: Reviewed language learning research, educational technology studies, and gamification principles. User research: Interviewed international students about language challenges, social experiences, cultural adaptation, learning preferences EdTech framework: Applied proven educational design patterns, spaced repetition, adaptive learning, and social motivation techniques Gamification strategy: Integrated game mechanics (progress, achievement, competition, collaboration) supporting educational goals

The solution

Our team designed a gamified music-based language learning platform addressing international students' English barriers while facilitating social connection and cultural adaptation. Key deliverables: Music learning mechanics: Song-based lessons exposing students to diverse accents, vocabulary, and cultural expressions through an engaging medium Social features: Community tools enabling peer practice, cultural exchange, friend connections, reducing isolation Gamification system: Progress tracking, achievements, leaderboards, challenges, motivating consistent practice and improvement Adaptive learning: Personalised difficulty adjustment and content recommendations matching student proficiency and interests
