Academic Research
Gecko Marketplace represented foundational academic exploration of social impact design addressing Indigenous Australian economic empowerment and cultural preservation. The project investigated how digital marketplace could support traditional knowledge monetization, cultural product sales, and community connections while respecting Indigenous protocols and avoiding exploitation. The challenge was applying UX design methodology to sensitive cultural context requiring extensive research, community consultation, and ethical framework development.
Indigenous Australian artisans have limited access to platforms that showcase their cultural heritage, and existing marketplaces don’t support sharing Indigenous knowledge alongside products.
Our UTS team applied ethical design research methodology prioritizing Indigenous community consultation and cultural sensitivity throughout academic exploration. Research approach: Literature foundation: Reviewed Indigenous economic empowerment research, cultural preservation studies, ethical design principles, existing platform analysis Cultural protocol research: Studied Indigenous consultation methodologies, cultural sensitivity requirements, community engagement best practices Ethical framework: Developed design principles ensuring Indigenous voice, avoiding exploitation, respecting cultural knowledge and protocols Community focus: Prioritized authentic community needs over commercial assumptions and generic e-commerce patterns
